To help you determine what condiments would make your book tasty MMU has included the following glossary to assist in deciding which elements you would like to incorporate in your book.

  • Chapter Headings – are the principal division of a writing. The purpose of a chapter heading design is to set the tone for the upcoming chapter of the book.
  • Chapter Subheading – include the different section headings within the chapters. They help the author communicate with the reader.
  • Block Quotes – a block quote (also known as a long quotation or extract) is a quotation in a written document that is set off from the main text as a paragraph or block of text and typically distinguished visually using indentation and a different typeface or smaller size font.   • Pull Quotes – a brief, attention-catching quotation, typically in a distinctive typeface, taken from the main text of an article and used as a subheading or graphics feature to pull readers in.
  • Simple Chart or Graphs

  • Endnotes – a note printed at the end of a book or section of a book.
  • Footnotes – an ancillary piece of information printed at the bottom of a page.
  • Epigraphs – a quotation near the front of the book. They can be used at the heads of each chapter.
  • Drop Cap – are used to add style or grab a reader’s attention.
  • Lists – a series of names or other items written or printed together in a meaningful grouping or sequence so as to constitute record.
  • Sidebar – typographically distinct section of a page, as in a book or magazine, that amplifies or highlights the main text.
  • Colophon – a notice at the end of a book describing text typography, typeface name and credits to the book’s designer and others involved in its physical production.
  • Glossary – a list at the back of a book, explaining or defining difficult or unusual words and expressions used in the text.

  • Cover Manipulation – is where a design has been created however the design doesn’t match requirements of the printer without being manipulated to fit their template.
  • Cover Add-ons – is where a design has been created however specific elements are missing and need to be added such as the ISBN, barcode and QR code.
  • Front Matter – the pages at the beginning of a book that comes before the body of the book.
  • Body – is the main portion or body of the book.
  • Epilogue  – either in the voice of the author or a continuation of the main narrative meant to bring closure to the work.
  • Back Matter – is the section at the end of the book where citations, notes, and ancillary material are gathered.
  • Per Page – is the typesetting of each page with adjustments of text flow through kerning, hyphenation, widow/orphan control, letter-spacing, line-spacing, and other typographical elements
  • Design – is the structure of the book or how it looks.
